Are You Eligible for the CFP Board Accelerated Path? 

Having a CPA license makes you automatically eligible for the Acclerated Path. You’ve already gained the relevant and foundational knowledge CFP® professionals need, so the next step is just proving you know how to put the financial planning knowledge into action with a Capstone Course.   

In addition to completing the Capstone Course, all CFP® candidates must fulfill the following requirements:  

  • Pass the CFP Exam 
  • Gain 6,000 hours of relevant experience (or a 4,000 hour apprenticeship) 
  • Pass a background check and sign that you will uphold CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct 

Also, if you aren’t a CPA but hold one of these credentials, you’re also eligible: 

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®)
  • Chartered Financial Consultant (CHFC®) 
  • Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®)
  • Licensed Attorney 
  • Ph.D. in Financial Planning, Finance, Business Administration, or Economics 
  • CFP® Certification from outside the United States.

What is the Capstone Course?

CFP Board requires all CFP® candidates complete a Board-registered Financial Planning Capstone Course. This course ensures candidates can apply essential financial planning concepts to real-world scenarios through case studies, culminating in the creation of a complete financial plan. 

 

How long does it take to complete the Capstone?

While BIF provides three-month access to the Capstone, most students finish it in just two weeks!  

Do I have to take an Accelerated Path?

If you’re a CPA, but want to brush up on skills related to estate planning, tax planning, and other facets of financial planning, BIF’s CFP® Education program is both efficient and comprehensive. We also offer individual courses so if you just need to build up your knowledge in one or two key places, that’s a fast, affordable option.  

What is the CFP® Exam?

It’s a single exam consisting of 170 multiple-choice questions related to eight topics:  

  • Professional Conduct and Regulation (8%) 
  • General Principles of Financial Planning (15%) 
  • Risk Management and Insurance Planning (11%) 
  • Investment Planning (18%) 
  • Tax Planning (14%)

How long does it take to pass the CFP Exam?
