If you’re preparing for the CFP® Exam, you may be wondering about the pass rate and your chances of passing on the first try. Because the exam is offered only three times a year, pass rates vary by cohort. Here, we review the latest and historical pass rates and share tips to help you pass on your first attempt.
The CFP® Exam pass rate for the July 2026 exam was 66%, according to CFP Board. Of the 3,621 candidates who sat for the exam during the July 14 to 21 testing window, 2,388 passed.
That makes July 2026 the largest July exam in CFP Board history, and it follows a record-setting March 2026 exam, when 4,391 candidates tested and 67% passed. In other words, more people than ever are pursuing CFP® certification, and roughly two out of three are passing on any given attempt.
The headline number only tells part of the story, though. First-time candidates in July 2026 passed at 69%, while repeat candidates passed at 57%. Looking at how the pass rate has moved over three decades, and why first-time takers consistently outperform, can help you plan a study approach that puts you on the right side of that statistic.
Since CFP Board introduced its current exam blueprint in March 2022, the overall pass rate has stayed between 62% and 68%, averaging 65% across 14 administrations and nearly 48,000 test sittings. The table below shows every result under the current blueprint, newest first.

Under the current blueprint, no administration has dropped below 62% or risen above 68%. Candidates can reasonably expect a pass rate in the mid-60s.
Annual test volume has climbed steadily. In 2024, 10,437 candidates tested and 6,763 passed, both records at the time. March 2026 then set a new single-exam record of 4,391 candidates.
First-time takers have passed at 65% to 72% under the current blueprint, while repeat takers have passed at 50% to 60%. That gap of roughly 10 to 20 points shows up in nearly every cohort on record.
Today's mid-60s pass rate is higher than much of the exam's history. Between 2000 and 2011, overall pass rates frequently landed in the low to mid-50s, and dipped to 50% in July 2009. Rates have trended upward since the 2012 and 2016 blueprint updates and have been consistently in the mid-60s since 2022.
CFP Board notes that results are not directly comparable across blueprints, because each blueprint change brings new content weighting and a new cut score. A higher pass rate today does not necessarily mean the exam is easier; it may also reflect better-prepared candidates and stronger education programs.
A 66% CFP® Exam pass rate means about one in three candidates does not pass on a given attempt. When considering the CFP® Exam difficulty, much of it comes from the exam's length and its emphasis on applying knowledge rather than recalling it.
According to CFP Board's exam format overview, the exam includes:
Case studies are where many candidates struggle. They require you to hold a client's full financial picture in mind, identify which details matter, and choose the best recommendation among several plausible answers. Six hours of testing also makes stamina and pacing a real factor in the outcome.
In July 2026, first-time candidates passed at 69% versus 57% for repeat candidates. CFP Board does not publish the reasons for the gap, but a few explanations are commonly cited. First-time takers typically sit for the exam soon after finishing their education coursework, while the material is fresh. Repeat takers, by definition, include candidates who found the exam difficult the first time, and some retest without significantly changing how they prepare.
The takeaway for candidates: your first attempt is statistically your best shot, so it pays to prepare thoroughly before you sit rather than treating the first attempt as a practice run.
The candidates who pass share a common thread: structured, sustained preparation that mirrors the real exam. These strategies can help you join them.
If you are retesting, start by reviewing your diagnostic results by domain and change your approach where you underperformed. Repeating the same preparation tends to produce the same result.
